I am a medical microbiologist who has worked for many years researching the ocular surface and contact lenses. I have taken antimicrobial contact lenses through to Phase III clinical trials. My research has also encompassed proteomic and lipidomic studies of the tear film. We have also investigated the use of tears as the source of biomarkers for diabetes, breast and prostate cancer. These research studies have led to the publication of 17 patents and over 550 peer reviewed papers. I have trained over 30 post-doctoral scientists and 70 post-graduate (PhD) students. My recent awards include election as Division Interdisciplinary Member of the Council on Microbial Sciences, American Society for Microbiology (2022), Vision Care Section Award, American Public Health Association (2020), and Korb Award for Excellence – American Optometric Association (2020).
